What is Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy – often referred to as marital therapy or marriage counseling – is a type of psychotherapy aimed at helping partners in a relationship recognize and resolve problems or conflicts within their relationship. Typically couples therapy involves joint sessions with both partners interacting with the therapist. In situations where one partner refuses to attend therapy sessions it is still possible to work on the relationship with one of the partners. Most often couples therapy is relatively short term; especially in situations of weathering a crisis. Longer term therapy may be necessary for couples whose relationship has greatly deteriorated.
Who can benefit from Couples Therapy?
Couples therapy is aimed at helping couples in all types of relationships, including heterosexual, homosexual, married or not. Couples therapy can strengthen the bonds in a relationship and help partners gain better understanding and insight into their differences. It is also beneficial in helping couples make decisions about rebuilding the relationship or ending a relationship because the differences are irreconcilable.
Issues addressed in couples therapy are as numerous and diverse as the couples themselves. Some of the common issues include: communication problems; sexual difficulties; child rearing; blended families; financial troubles; anger; infidelity; domestic abuse; substance abuse/addiction; mental or physical illness and much more. The role of the therapist is to help the couple develop the skills needed for a healthier relationship. This often includes learning better communication and listening skills, as well as skills for problem solving and resolving differences.
